About the lecture: While the beneficial cardiovascular health effects of leisure time physical activity are well documented, recent studies suggest that occupational physical activity may be detrimental to workers health. These opposing effects of physical activity across work and leisure domains have been described as the “physical activity health paradox”. However, current physical activity guidelines by professional organizations in cardiology, sports medicine, and public health around the world ignore these paradoxical findings and therefore may not be safe for the working population. In this lecture Dr. Krause will quantify risks and benefits based his collaborative international research and new meta-analyses of the available evidence, discuss possible explanations for the observed paradox, and caution against simplistic public health messaging advocating increased physical activity at work that ignores possible adverse effects of physical activity for the most vulnerable segments of the aging working population.

About the speaker: Dr. Krause is Professor of Epidemiology and Environmental Health Sciences. He directs the NIOSH-sponsored Southern California Education and Research Center that trains professionals in occupational medicine, occupational and environmental health nursing, industrial hygiene, occupational epidemiology, and allied sciences. He received his medical degree and a doctoral degree in orthopedic medicine from the University of Hamburg, Germany, and his Master of Public Health and PhD degree in epidemiology from the University of California Berkeley. His research covers a wide range of occupational health issues including ergonomic and psychosocial risk factors, work injury and disability prevention, and the epidemiology of chronic musculoskeletal and cardiovascular diseases. At UCLA he teaches courses in occupational epidemiology, ergonomics, and interdisciplinary occupational health practice. His international research in cardiovascular disease epidemiology has helped to uncover the physical activity health paradox that describes opposing health effects of occupational and leisure time physical activity. He is a member of the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) and serves on its Committee for Cardiovascular Health.
